8/15 Poetry + Cyanotype Workshop by Lora O’Shaughnessy and Sofie Carlin

  • Denton Maker Center 728 North Elm Street Denton, Texas, 76201 United States (map)

Discover the joys of “the blue print!” The Prussian Blue print to be exact. Students will learn best practices for creating Cyanotype prints with just some simple chemistry, watercolor paper, and everyday objects. They will explore the history of this early photographic process, and experiment with a variety of objects and both digital and analog negatives. They will leave with a completed Cyanotype print and a variety of experiments to inspire them to continue their alternative process journey.

Within this workshop, students will uncover one fact: What even is poetry?. And, through using the cyanotype as a blueprint, students will learn the many ways to tell a story through narrative and ‘free verse’ poems. Students will be focusing instead on the freedoms, not rules, poetry allows, and will leave with completed poems, collages, and new skills that will inspire them to continue on in their journey as writers.

All materials provided. If there is something specific they would like to use to make a print with be sure to bring that along.

Sofie Carlin is a writer and artist that resides in Denton, Texas. Anything they create tends to deal with the mundanity of life, the five senses, the environment, and uplifting marginalized communities. When not creating, they can be found in various coffee shops, watercoloring, or taking photographs.

Lora O’Shaughnessy is a Denton based photographer, zine maker, and doll enthusiast. She has a deep love for analog and historical photographic processes, storytelling, and research rabbit holes. When not in the darkroom, she can be found taking instant photographs with her boyfriend and cat.
