Thurmanite Bookmarks with James Thurman
What could be more appropriate than having your own bookmark made from pages of book?!? In this workshop, premade blanks of Thurmanite will be shaped and polished by the students to create their own unique bookmarks.
Miniature Bookcase Altoid Tins with Donna Vaux
Students will use a variety of materials to create a miniature bookcase scene inside an Altoids tin. They’ll learn how to make their own miniatures—such as books, pencils, and decorative artwork—at an approximate 1:12 scale. We’ll also use scrapbook paper and pages from old books to mod podge book-themed collages on the outside, hiding the teeny, tiny treasures inside.
Watercolor Bookmarks with Linda Hilterbrandt
In this workshop we will explore the property of watercolors with a variety of techniques and other materials. Explorations will including wet on dry, wet on wet wash, frisket, salt, plastic wrap, additive and subtractive stencil techniques. Our watercolor papers will then be turned into beautiful bookmarks that can be further embellished with thread, beads, quotes and other collage items.
Crafting Ostu-e Omamori (Oni Protection Charm) with Crystal Garrett
In this workshop we will create a small Otsu-e Omamori charm to hang near the entry of your home. We will first wood burn and paint the wood and then use cord to create a traditional Japanese omamori knot to hang the charm. This workshop will cover basic wood burning techniques and how to make smooth lines as well as how to correct mistakes when they occur.
Bangles, Cuffs & Bracelets with Kaki Crowell-Hilde
Students will learn how to shape flat stock into wonderful bracelets. We will explore a variety of hammers and stakes that make it possible to form concave and convex bangles and slightly rounded cuffs. Using brass and copper sheet and seamless brass tubing, we will produce several bracelets all of which can be worn together.
Copper Fold-Formed Earrings with James Thurman
Fold-forming is a quick but surprising way of shaping and texturing metal. By hammering on folded metal in particular ways, a wide range of shapes can be easily created. For this workshop, each student will have a chance to create their own pair of copper fold-formed earrings with silver ear wires. All tools and materials are included. No experience is necessary!
Braided Wire Ring with Umut Demirgüç Thurman
In this workshop, participants will learn the techniques to create a handcrafted braided wire ring. The session will cover essential skills such as measuring ring sizes accurately, braiding wire using a vise, and soldering to secure the design. Copper wire will be provided for the class, but attendees are welcome to bring their own silver wire if preferred. Soldering experience necessary.
Letterpress 101: Print your Own Bookplate! with Christine Adame
Bookplates are small paper inserts that label books in one’s personal library. The workshop will begin with a small presentation about the history of letterpress and bookplates. Students will learn the basics of letterpress printing by operating a small tabletop letterpress. The layout of the bookplate will be pre-set except for a small portion. Participants will get to customize their bookplate by choosing from a collection of symbols. They will then print the bookplate design in black ink on white paper. Workshop participants will take home up to 10 copies of their bookplates.
Blackout Poetry Talk and Workshop with Dr. Jeanette Laredo and Meg Fletcher
Do you want to write poetry but just can’t find the words? Try blackout poetry instead! Blackout poetry is when you take existing words in a text and black out most of them, leaving some words visible to form a poem. The text can be anything from a receipt or a book page to a newspaper article and you can black out words with markers, pens or colored pencils. No matter what your skill level is, blackout poetry is for everyone!
Zines Can Change the World: A 101 Workshop with Orion Fern

Hand Stitched Hardback Journal with Crystal Nelson
In this workshop we will create a journal for writing, drawing, painting, documenting travel or anything you like! We will use vintage book covers and various papers to construct the book and learn about the structure of a book. (Signatures, spine, binding, end papers) Students will learn to stitch the binding together with waxed twine and decorate using beads and charms.

Haiku Writing with Harlan W. Butt
A haiku is a poem of seventeen syllables in three lines of five, seven and five, traditionally evoking images of the natural world. The instructor will read to the class about the haiku process and participants will compose their own poems and read them to the class. Each participant will receive Harlan's Haiku book that is included to the class fee.
Seeded Journal (Mixed Media Flexagon Book) with Crystal Nelson
In this fun workshop we will be starting with a 22x30 piece of mixed media paper and transforming it into a 5.5x7.5 mixed media art journal. We will begin with intuitive collage work then move into wet and dry medium using acrylic inks and water soluble graphite. Finally, we will magically transform this large paper into a 16 page journal ready for more of your creativity. These books are great for drawing, painting and writing.
Fictive Art Seminar with James Thurman
Fictive Art typically refers to visual artworks that have a supporting fictional narrative in addition to their physical aspects. This seminar will give an overview of Fictive Art through examples of James’ two major fictive art projects along with inspirations and examples of work by other fictive artists. Attendees will also be guided through a quick exercise to imagine their own possible fictive art project.
